Aerial photograph of a stone arch railroad bridge

July 12-18, 2010

"Stone Arches"

The stone arches of this railroad bridge have been standing in southern Medina County for many years - we believe the bridge is between 70 and 80 but have not been able to confirm it. Perhaps one of these days, we'll venture out to take some ground-based photos and look for a date...

Aerial photograph of the Air Force Museum in Dayton, OH

July 5-11, 2010

"THE Air Force Museum"

The official name of this museum is the National Museum of the US Air Force®, but most people know it simply as "The Air Force Museum". It is the largest and oldest military aviation museum and is located in Dayton, Ohio. The museum is great for the whole family and offers free admission and parking. The three large hangars contain hundreds of aircraft and several more are on display outside (a close-up view of them can be found in our Dayton stock photo gallery...) The museum also has one of the coolest gift shops that you'll ever find with aviation themed items for all ages. We highly recommend visiting if you are ever in the area.

"Summer Fun"

Zoombezi Bay waterpark in Powell, Ohio, (on the northwest side of Columbus) is a popular place for families to cool off in the summer. The park is right across from the Columbus Zoo and was the subject of our Stock Photo of the Week once before in the summer of 2008 (albeit from a distance...).

Aerial photo of a Giant Eagle supermarket remodel project

June 21-27, 2010

"Giant(er) Eagle"

This Giant Eagle supermarket is in the final phases of a renovation project which nearly doubled its size. We document many projects of all sizes from the air - from small ones like this to huge developments with budgets in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Aerial photos provide a complete overview and record of a project's progress. Larger projects benefit from weekly photography, especially in the early phases of construction. Smaller projects may use monthly photography.

"Lake Medina Revisited"

This aerial photo shows Lake Medina (in Medina, Ohio). This lake was the subject of our photo of the week once before in 2007. That photo was taken in early spring before the trees were green.

At the bottom of this photo, Summa Health System's new facility, the Health Center at Lake Medina, can be seen currently under construction just south of Ohio State Route 18. It is slated to open in the fall, 2010.

May 3-9, 2010 Thanks Mom!

"Holding Short"

The six airplanes that can be seen in this photo are waiting their turn for takeoff. The airplanes must wait behind the black and yellow "hold short" line until the air traffic controller clears them onto the runway for take-off. These planes will be departing on runway 24L ("Two-Four Left") at the Cleveland Hopkins airport.

Aerial view of clouds popping up along Lake Erie's southern shore

April 26 - May 2, 2010

"Visual Meteorology Lesson"

This photo provides a good example of what happens when air passes over a large body of water to land -- clouds pop up due to the uneven heating. Note that the edge of the line of clouds is the same shape as the shoreline of Lake Erie.

Aerial view of Aeroncas parked at the Skyline Diner at Salem (Ohio) Airpark

April 19-25, 2010

"Drive-In or Fly-In"

The Skyline Diner at the Salem Airpark in eastern Ohio is popular with both locals and pilots because of the great food and friendly service. As the pilots of these four Aeroncas and one Cessna know, the airport is a great place to meet your friends and make new ones. For those of you lucky enough to be able to fly in, the airport identifier is 38D. If you need to drive (or the weather is bad), the address is 11718 Salem-Warren Rd, Salem, OH 44460.

Aerial view of Progressive Field and Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, OH

April 12-18, 2010

"Play Ball!"

The newly restored Terminal Tower in downtown Cleveland stands out nicely on the horizon in front of Lake Erie in this photo of Progressive Field. The Cleveland Indians will begin their 2010 home season this week. Quicken Loans Arena is also visible in this photo, but unlike it is shown here, it will not be in the background of the minds of northern Ohio sports fans for a couple more months. We will be watching as the Cavaliers wind down their great season (or - dare we say it??? - their championship season...) before our focus turns completely from basketball to baseball.

Aerial photo of boats docked at a marina on Lake Erie near Cleveland, OH

April 5-11, 2010

"Waiting for Warm Weather"

Record high temperatures in northern Ohio the past couple of weeks have many people thinking about summer fun on Lake Erie. This photo is from last year, but we're certain the boats will be out of winter storage and back at the docks soon!

Aerial photo of spring flowering trees in a suburban midwestern neighborhood

March 29 - April 4, 2010 Happy Easter!

"Around the Block"

This photo of a neighborhood in Medina, Ohio, was taken at the very end of April, 2009, but record warm temperatures in northern Ohio this week have caused the trees to begin to fill out and bloom early this year. We expect trees to be filled out a full two weeks earlier than they did last year.

Aerial photo of downtown Cleveland, OH, Hopkins airport, and Perry Nuclear Generating Station

March 22-28, 2010

"Cleveland and Hopkins"

The runways and taxiways of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport point to the Lake Erie shore just north of downtown Cleveland. On the horizon and just to the right of downtown, the Perry Nuclear Generating Station is visible (despite a layer of haze/smog). The power plant is about 45 miles from the airport, demonstrating the excellent visibility of early spring air.

Aerial photo of Lester Rail Trail park and the Northeastern Ohio Live Steamers miniature railroad track

March 15-21, 2010 Happy St. Patrick's Day!

"NEOLS"

The Northeastern Ohio Live Steamers operates miniature trains at this facility northwest of Medina, Ohio. The land is part of the Lester Rail Trail park. The members of NEOLS host many events throughout the year, including free rides (donations appreciated!) for the public - these events are always popular with both children and adults!

This photo clearly shows all of the estimated 2.5 miles of track at the facility only because there are no leaves on the trees. If you need something photographed that will be obscured by leaves, act quickly or you'll have to wait until November!

A closeup aerial view of some of the many roller coasters at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio

March 8-14, 2010

"Just Around the Corner..."

...and up the giant hill, down the giant drop off, through the loop, and beyond the corkscrew! Winter is coming to an end here in the northern hemisphere and we're looking right past spring and into summer. We aren't the only ones - Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio, is currently hiring for many positions in preparation for the crowds that will soon be enjoying the park.

Aerial photo of a paint and finish weather research facility near Medina, OH

March 1-7, 2010

"Weathering the Elements"

This aerial photo shows a paint and finish weather testing site in Ohio. A variety of paints are applied to a variety of materials and exposed to the elements to see how they hold up. The small rectangle in the extreme lower left corner of the image (right below the "2009" in the copyright notice) is an automated weather observation station that continuously monitors and records the conditions.

Aerial photo of the Cleveland, Ohio, downtown skyline, surrounding area, and icy Lake Erie in the winter

February 22-28, 2010

"Icy Cleveland"

Crisp winter air provides the opportunity for nice wide angle photos like this view of downtown Cleveland and a mostly frozen Lake Erie. The bright orange seats in Cleveland Stadium stand out prominently along the lake shore in this nearly black and white image.

Aerial photo of Brandywine ski resort in Cuyahoga Valley National Park near Cleveland, OH

February 15-21, 2010

"Brandywine"

Ski season is winding down in Ohio, but there is still plenty of snow on the ground in northeastern Ohio. Brandywine Ski Resort in Sagamore Hills, Ohio (between Cleveland and Akron), is located in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. If the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver have inspired you to hit the slopes, get out there while you still can!

Aerial photo of a snowy train tressel bridge over a river in Pennsylvania

February 8-14, 2010 Happy Valentine's Day!

"Snow Covered Trestles"

Record snowfall in the eastern U.S. this month has created some beautiful views from the air. Thundering freight trains have been unable to clear the snow off of this triple trestle railroad bridge in western Pennsylvania.

Aerial photo of the University of Akron's (Ohio) new football stadium

February 1-7, 2010

"The Big Game"

Ok, so this isn't *exactly* the site of the "Big Game" between the Colts and the Saints this weekend, but it is perhaps the site of some big games for future players in THE Big Game... In any case, the game in Miami gives us a good excuse to take a break from wintery photos and post something with some nice green grass in it!

This is actually a low level aerial photo of the stadium that is the new home (as of the 2009 season) of the Universtiy of Akron Zips football team. Officially, it is called "InfoCision Stadium - Summa Field".

Aerial photo of cold winter skies - overcast altostratus with a few scattered cumulus clouds

January 25-31, 2010

"Cold Winter Sky"

This unusual winter view was captured while flying between an approaching layer of altostratus clouds and a scattered layer of a few thin fair weather cumulus clouds. The orangish yellow tint assures us that the sun is still shining out there... somewhere...

Aerial photo - skeet shoot debris on a shooting range near Medina, OH

January 18-24, 2010

"Shooting Range"

The "hunter orange" debris visible in this field are the remains of thousands of clay pigeons. Sportsmen (and sportswomen) shoot these small disks out of mid-air for sport. Don't worry - we are very careful to fly beyond the range of the shotguns used for skeet shooting!

Aerial photo - a message for retiring employees on top of a parking garage in Medina, OH

January 11-17, 2010

"Bon Voyage"

Here's another photo of something that could only be seen from our aerial vantage point - a good bye message to Pat and Steve. We guess that someone wrote the message in the snow on top of the brand new parking garage in downtown Medina (Ohio) to say good-bye to friends or family flying home after the holidays.

Update: We have learned that this was actually a message written in the snow by the local sheriff's department to say goodbye to two retiring employees. This is definitely the biggest retirement card we've seen!

Aerial photo - abstract view of driveway and decorations resembling a baby

January 1-10, 2010 Happy New Year!

"Baby New Year?"

Sometimes, patterns that could never be seen from the ground really stand out from high overhead. In this case, we thought we saw an infant smiling up at us. Someone else thought it looked like Kenny of "South Park" fame - thus proving once again that beauty is in the eye of the beholder!
