A crescent moon shines above a Christmas display of life sized angels at dusk at a home near Willard, Ohio

December 20-31, 2010 Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

"Peace on Earth"

It has been said that no one prays for peace more than a solider, but we bet their family members come in a close second. This peaceful Christmas scene of life-sized angels under a crescent moon was photographed near Willard, Ohio, earlier this month. Our Christmas wish remains the same as in years past - for members of our armed forces and their families to be reunited quickly and safely.

Note: More photos of this display can be viewed on our 2011 blog and news archive page.

Aerial photograph of ski runs and moguls at Boston Mills Ski Resort, Peninsula, Ohio

December 13-19, 2010

"North Bowl"

You are looking at an aerial photograph of the North Bowl at Boston Mills Ski Resort in Peninsula, Ohio. If the moguls at the top of this black diamond run are too daunting, perhaps you can work up to them by taking on Peter's Pride, an intermediate slope to the left. Boston Mills and its sister resort, Brandywine, offer runs for all skill levels and they are both located in the beautiful Cuyahoga Valley National Park, just south of Cleveland.

Indians Snow Days at Progressive Field in downtown Cleveland is a first-of-its-kind event. The event offers ice skating, snow tubing, a 3,000 square foot snow maze and other fun activities. It runs through January 2, 2011. (Tickets to the event would make a great gift!)

Aerial photograph of a car lot at night in Medina, Ohio

November 29 - December 5, 2010

"All I want for Christmas..."

Car dealerships are well lit at night and easy to spot from the air. If you've been good this year, perhaps your significant other will be doing their holiday shopping here at Bill Doraty's Kia dealership in Medina, Ohio, or another lot like it... (It doesn't hurt to dream, does it?)

It is slated to open completely in early 2011. Above All - Ohio has been doing construction progress aerial photography since the very beginning of this project, having been selected after a lengthy and very competitive proposal/interview process. More information about the Ahuja Medical Center can be found on UH's web site.

Aerial photograph of early morning fog obscuring wind turbines on a mountain ridge in West Viriginia

October 25-31, 2010 Trick or Treat!

"Three-Armed Monsters"

Monsters with three giant flailing arms are invading the country! We would recommend running for the hills, but the mountain ridges seem to be their favorite place to live... Wind turbines like the ones seen here, poking through ground fog on a mountain ridge in West Virginia, are sprouting up all over the country. Although they may be scary to pilots who can come upon them unexpectedly (they can literally pop up over night), these "green energy" sources are good for the environment and are here to stay.

Aerial photograph of sunbeams breaking through the clouds early in the morning south of Canton, Ohio

October 18-24, 2010

"Sunbeams at Sunrise"

Sunbeams act as spotlights on small pieces of land somewhere south of Canton, Ohio, and west of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in this early morning aerial photo. The plumes of steam seen on the horizon are from power plants that are along the Ohio River (perhaps one of them is this one...). The Ohio River is about 40 miles away from the camera in this dramatic view.

Aerial photograph of spectacular fall colors in a suburban Toledo (Ohio) neighborhood

October 11-17, 2010

"A Peek at the Peak"

This nearly straight down aerial view is of a suburban neighborhood near Toledo, Ohio. Fall colors are at or near their peak in northern Ohio this week, slightly earlier than last year. Whether you're in the air viewing things from overhead like us or on the ground getting a closer view and crunching leaves with your feet, enjoy the autumn season while it lasts!

October 4-10, 2010

"Smashing Good Times"

The stands are full of fans watching brightly colored vehicles try to outlast each other in the demolition derby that is taking place in this photo. The competition was being held in the early evening hours of a Saturday night in Deleware, Ohio (in fact, it was the same beautiful early fall night as the football game featured in last week's Stock Photo of the Week...). The evening sun made for some long shadows in the photo, but it also brought out the colors of the cars.

Aerial photograph of Selby Field and the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University at dusk, Delaware, OH

September 27 - October 3, 2010

"Radioactive?"

No - there is nothing in this photo that is causing dangerous radiation, but this college football field under the lights at dusk sure reminded us of a glowing meteor crater from an old science fiction movie. The only thing missing is a whisp of black smoke. Ohio Wesleyan University recently held its first night time football game at Selby Field and a generous alumnus had us document the event from the air. Ohio Wesleyan is located in Delaware, Ohio, just north of Columbus.

Aerial photograph of the former First Church of Christ, Scientist, University Circle, Ohio

September 20-26, 2010

"Predecessor"

This historic building near University Circle, Ohio, is often compared to (and confused with) Severence Hall, the home of the Cleveland Orchestra, for good reason. The building was completed in 1931 as the First Church of Christ, Scientist. It was designed by the firm Walker and Weeks, who later designed Severance Hall. The building was renovated in 2005 and now serves as the headquarters of Nottingham-Sprik Design Associates. More information about the building (and a few more photos) can be found on their web site.

Aerial photograph of a corn maze between Cleveland, Ohio, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

September 13-19, 2010

"Gearing Up"

Owners of corn mazes are getting ready to open for their busy fall season all around Ohio (and the rest of the country, we assume...). In addition to giant mazes, these ever popular fall family fun destinations usually include pumpkin picking, hay rides, apple cider, and perhaps a few ghosts and goblins in haunted houses. This football-themed maze pays tribute to the rivalry between the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers. The field is located about half-way between the two cities and the owners are wisely keeping their own allegience a secret...

The J.M. Smucker Company Store and Café in Orrville, Ohio, allows customers to shop for a wide variety of Smucker's products (as well as other brands) and household items for baking and gifts. Often times, free samples of their delicious offerings are available. For the heartier appetite, the café offers a great lunch menu and a patio-style indoor dining area. (By the way, this is not a paid endorsement of the store - our whole family just likes to go there!)

Aerial photograph of another beautiful sunset over Huron County in north central Ohio

August 16-22, 2010

"Summer Sunset"

What can we say? We're just suckers when it comes to beautiful sunsets! This one was witnessed from about 1000' above Willard, Ohio, in Huron county. For many children in Ohio, this view may be symbolic - this is the last full week of summer vacation for many schools. If we can get back into the habit of getting out of bed early enough, perhaps we can catch a sunrise next week to celebrate the dawn of a new school year! (Don't hold your breath, though...)

Aerial photograph of round hay bails in the fields in Ohio's Amish country

August 9-15, 2010

"Rollin' the Hay"

Round hay bales dot one field in an interesting pattern while the newly cut hay in the adjacent fields is being prepared for baling. In Ohio's Amish country, this work is still done by horse-drawn implements. In the smallest rectangular field, just above and to the right of the center of the photo, two horses can be seen working.

Preston's H.O.P.E. playground in Beachwood, Ohio (near Cleveland), is a huge playground built with special consideration for accessibility by children with disabilities. The nearly 60,000 square foot playground has many unique features that allow nearly all children to enjoy it - it is wired for sound for vision impaired kids, large windows in the structures allow hearing impaired children to communicate with parents on the ground via sign language, and wide ramps throughout the park allow wheelchair access. The playground is open to the public and free for everyone to enjoy.

"THE Air Force Museum"

The official name of this museum is the National Museum of the US Air Force®, but most people know it simply as "The Air Force Museum". It is the largest and oldest military aviation museum and is located in Dayton, Ohio. The museum is great for the whole family and offers free admission and parking. The three large hangars contain hundreds of aircraft and several more are on display outside (a close-up view of them can be found in our Dayton stock photo gallery...) The museum also has one of the coolest gift shops that you'll ever find with aviation themed items for all ages. We highly recommend visiting if you are ever in the area.

This Giant Eagle supermarket is in the final phases of a renovation project which nearly doubled its size. We document many projects of all sizes from the air - from small ones like this to huge developments with budgets in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Aerial photos provide a complete overview and record of a project's progress. Larger projects benefit from weekly photography, especially in the early phases of construction. Smaller projects may use monthly photography.

As the pilots of these four Aeroncas and one Cessna know, the airport is a great place to meet your friends and make new ones. For those of you lucky enough to be able to fly in, the airport identifier is 38D. If you need to drive (or the weather is bad), the address is 11718 Salem-Warren Rd, Salem, OH 44460.

Quicken Loans Arena is also visible in this photo, but unlike it is shown here, it will not be in the background of the minds of northern Ohio sports fans for a couple more months. Ok, so this isn't *exactly* the site of the "Big Game" between the Colts and the Saints this weekend, but it is perhaps the site of some big games for future players in THE Big Game... In any case, the game in Miami gives us a good excuse to take a break from wintery photos and post something with some nice green grass in it!

Here's another photo of something that could only be seen from our aerial vantage point - a good bye message to Pat and Steve. We guess that someone wrote the message in the snow on top of the brand new parking garage in downtown Medina (Ohio) to say good-bye to friends or family flying home after the holidays.

Update: We have learned that this was actually a message written in the snow by the local sheriff's department to say goodbye to two retiring employees. This is definitely the biggest retirement card we've seen!
