A red, white, and blue snowman ornament on a tree decorated for the Cleveland (Ohio) Botanical Garden's "WinterShow"

December 19-31, 2011 Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

"Patriotic Snowman"

We found this red, white, and blue snowman adorning a tree on display at the Cleveland Botanical Gardens "WinterShow." The show features spectacular gingerbread houses created by professionals, amateurs, and families from all over northeast Ohio. Christmas trees decorated in themes inspired by holiday stories are also displayed. This snowman was on a tree decorated by the Avon-on-the-Lake Garden Club, inspired by Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner.

We don't know if the colors were purposely chosen to be patriotic or not, but it reminded us that many men and women in the armed forces cannot be home for the holidays. As has become our tradition, we use our final "Stock Photo of the Week" to salute and these men and women and their families for their service and sacrifice.

A regular visible light photograph of an old Louis Marx electric train engine (circa 1949)

A thermal infrared photograph ("thermograph") of an old Louis Marx electric train engine (circa 1949) after running for about 10 minutes in 2011

December 12-18, 2011

"Hot Holiday Gifts"

This "Stream Line Steam Type Electrical Train" made by Louis Marx & Co. was a hot Christmas gift for some lucky boy in December of 1949. The receipt shows that this train set was purchased on December 10, 1949, at Sears, Roebuck, and Company on West Third Street in Mansfield, Ohio. The total purchase price was $5.15 which would equate to about $47 in 2011 by our best guess.

Fast forward to 2011 when we decided to point our infrared camera at the train after it had been running around the Christmas tree for about 10 minutes. Now we can literally see just how hot the toy is! Initially the readings were over 200° F, but the electric motor cooled quickly. Within 2 minutes after this image was acquired, the maximum temperature observed was down to a mere 160° F.

A high altitude aerial photo of downtown Cleveland, OH, with Progressive Field set up for "Snow Days"

December 5-11, 2011 12.7.1941: Infamy

"Snow Days 2011"

Several of downtown Cleveland's iconic buildings can be seen in this high altitude aerial. Near the top center of the photo is the Terminal Tower. In lower-middle portion, we can see two of Cleveland's three stadiums - Quicklen Loans Arena (also known as "The Q") and Progressive Field, which is set up for Indians Snow Days at Progressive Field.

The second annual Snow Days event features a slightly different layout than last year's event in order to accomodate a regulation hockey rink. On January 15, 2012, Progressive Field will play host to "The Frozen Diamond Faceoff" - an outdoor hockey game between collegiate rivals Ohio State and Michigan.

An oblique aerial view of a shopping mall in Erie, PA, packed with shoppers on Black Friday, 2011

November 28 - December 4, 2011

"Pack the Malls..."

If the parking lot of this Erie, Pennsylvania, shopping mall on "Black Friday" is any indication, retailers will be very jolly this year.

Many store owners and retail property managers like to get aerial photos on busy shopping days. They want photos that show packed parking lots to promote their properties. Unseasonably warm weather and the tradition of day-after-Thanksgiving shopping resulted in the best posible conditions for our clients.

If you have special needs and conditions for your ground or aerial photography, we can help! Please don't hesitate to give us a call to discuss them!

A near vertical view of discarded pumpkins and squash in a field near North Fairfield, Ohio (the north central part of the state)

November 21-27, 2011 11.24.11: We are thankful for YOU, our customers!

"Thanksgiving Leftovers"

Fall colors are spread across this field near North Fairfield, Ohio. A nearby farm grades large volumes of pumpkins, squash, gourds, and fall ornamental produce. Items that are too old, damaged, mishapen, or otherwise unsellable in stores are dumped in this field.

Much like the pumpkins in the "Extreme Pumpkin Smashing" stock photo a couple of weeks ago, the produce here is destined to be "disked," smashed, chopped, and broken so it can become fertilizer for future crops planted in this field. The process is bascially composting on a large scale; it is environmentally friendly recycling of organic material.

A somewhat low and close up aerial view of an island in Holiday Lakes near Willard, OH

November 14-20, 2011

"Holiday Lakes Revisited"

This lake community near Willard (in north-central Ohio), was the subject of one of our first "Stock Photo of the Week" entries back in 2007. The previous photo was a distant, wide angle view, photographed in the spring.

This is a lower, closer view of some of the residences at the lake, obviously taken in the fall. Though fall's peak had passed when this scene was photographed, the little spots of color, the smooth water, and late day light all help to convey the nice, peaceful mood one would associate with living on a small lake.

Aerial view of a family farm during the fall in rural Ohio

November 7-13, 2011 11.11.11: Thank you veterans!!

"Harvest Time"

Sites such as this dominate Ohio's landscape in October and November. The long hours that farmers put in during the spring and summer finally pay off in the autumn as harvest time arrives. Grain is harvested, collected, dried (as needed), and stored in silos until it is sold.

The fall is a very popular time for aerial photographs of family farms and this year was no exception. We photographed several farms for people who were planning ahead for Christmas gifts. If you didn't plan ahead, but think an aerial photo would make a great gift, you'd be right and it's not too late - the trees are mostly bare now, but how about giving a gift certificate? Contact us for details and pricing!

Aerial view of a pumpkin farm crushing leftover pumpkins in the field after halloween; near Wooster, OH

October 31 - November 6, 2011 Happy Halloween!

"Extreme Pumpkin Smashing"

No, this is not a photo of a large scale Halloween prank. This is what happens to unsold pumpkins that were left in the pumpkin patch on the day after Halloween. The farmers crush and cut up the pumpkins so that they deteriorate (rot...) faster over the winter.

If left unbroken, the pumpkins would not look much different in the spring. Their thick, hard shells would make it difficult to plow and fit the field for the spring planting. By breaking them open and cutting them into small pieces now, the pumpkins will compost quickly over the winter - they will become fertilizer for next year's crop!

Cleveland Browns fans tailgate in the Municipal Lot before the game with the Seattle Seahawks; October 23, 2011

October 24-30, 2011

"Game Day!"

We were able to get a somewhat rare and unusual view of the pre-game festivities in Cleveland this past weekend. Browns fans fill up the Municipal Lot along the shoreline of Lake Erie before all of the home games regardless of the weather. (However, the weather was perfect for tailgating and football when this photo was taken a couple of hours before the kickoff of the game with the Seattle Seahawks, October 23, 2011.)

Why are we calling this photo "somewhat rare" you ask? Well, check out our new blog and news archive page to find out and for a couple more photos from this flight!

A vertical aerial image of a freight train between a river and fall colored trees in PA

October 17-23, 2011

"Fall Train"

A freight train more or less bisects this vertical aerial view. The train is running along the Beaver River, just north of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

As you can see by the trees at the top of the photo, this photo was taken near the peak of fall colors in the Midwest. Our peak typically occurs in the second half of October, so if you would like stunning fall custom aerials for Christmas gifts, do not hesitate to order!

An aerial image of farmland in the early fall in rural OH

October 10-16, 2011

"Run?"

The pattern worked into this farmland in rural Ohio somewhat suggests letters - something that could only be visible and noticed from the air.

One thing that doesn't need to be seen from the air, but is certainly very nice to see, is the fall color evident in the trees at the bottom of this photo.

An aerial infrared view of an industrial building near Cleveland, Ohio

October 3-9, 2011

"Hot Spots"

This aerial thermal infrared image shows an area of high temperature where the two different roof elevations meet. This may or may not be a problem. It could be that there is a lack of insulation in this area but it is most likely just a result of the sun's heat being reflected and trapped in the corner.

One way to rule out (or confirm!) a problem would be to return to this site before sun rise. Another (slower and more difficult...) way would be to do a site visit and investigate the area more closely.

The white spots in the lower left corner of this image are residential roofs - asphalt shingles get very hot during the day. This image has not been adjusted to get temperature readings of those roofs (but it could be...) so they are reading off the scale.

An aerial photo of a small farm house and surrounding land in the early fall. Medina County, Ohio

September 26 - October 2, 2011

"Fall Farm"

October is a great month for aerial photos for those who love color and texture. In addition to colorful trees, the land in the Midwest becomes the proverbial patchwork quilt - corn that is ready to harvest is brown, soybeans are yellow, Winter wheat is green, some fields are plowed, some are freshly mowed, some are sprinkled with hay bales, etc. etc...

October in Ohio also usually has a good number of clear crisp days. Excellent visibility is crucial to obtaining excellent aerial photos.

Because of all of these factors (as well as the fact that the trees will soon be bare until May...) we usually have a rush of orders. If you need aerial photos before winter sets in, now is your final opportunity for the year.

An aerial photo of the Delaware County Fair, home of the Little Brown Jug, Delaware, Ohio

September 19-25, 2011

"Fall Fair"

There are still a few county fairs going on as the summer winds down and the first day of autumn arrives in Ohio. This late evening photo shows the Delaware (Ohio) County fairgrounds during last year's fair.

The 2011 Delaware County Fair runs through September 24, but perhaps the biggest day will be the 22nd when the well known harness racing event known as "The Little Brown Jug" takes place.

Another popular event is the demolition derby - we featured an aerial photo of that event last October.

Photos taken during the so-called "golden hours" (early morning or late day) like this one have nice, dramitic shadows giviving them depth and texture not found in mid-day aerials.

An aerial photo of The Oval on the campus of The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio

September 12-18, 2011

"Paths of Learning"

Summer is over and classes are back in session all across the country. From pre-schools to college campuses, students are once again hitting the books.

This aerial view is of The Oval - the center (at least at one time...) of the main campus at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Shown here during the relatively slow summer quarter dotted with sunbathers, The Oval has always been a popular place to meet friends, relax between classes, and study in the fresh air.

An aerial photo of the University of Cincinnati stadium and Varsity Center, Cincinnati, OH

August 29 - September 4, 2011

"Varsity Village"

At the center of the University of Cincinnati's campus is an area known as "Varsity Village." At the center of Varsity Village is the oddly shaped Richard E. Linder Athletics Center (directly above the stadium in this photo). The unusual shape of the building maximizes the use of the available space next to the Cincinnati Bearcats football stadium.

Designed by renowned architect Bernard Tschumi, the 236,000 square foot building opened 2006. It houses (among other things) the athletics' department offices and the George & Helen Smith Athletics Museum.

An aerial photo of Bristol Motor Speedway, Bristol, TN

August 22-28, 2011

"Racing Stadium"

The Bristol Motor Speedway in extreme northeastern Tennessee is a racetrak like no other - it is completely surrounded by grandstands, making it look more like a football stadium than a track. Approximately 160,000 race fans fill these stands twice a year for the Sprint Cup Series races.

The small 0.533 mile concrete oval is the next stop for the Sprint Cup Series drivers - a vastly different venue than the wide-open 2-mile superspeedway that is Michigan International Speedway, the site of the previous race for the series.

The medical campus at The Ohio State University is a busy place this summer - many construction projects are underway simultaneously. A photo like this can only be taken at a very low altitude via helicopter. Above All - Ohio has working relationships with many helicopter pilots throughout the midwest - please don't hesitate to give us a call the next time you need something photographed low and close!

A regular photograph of an inside corner of a refrigerated metal building

An infrared image showing the locations of purlins and girts in a metal building due to slight temperature variations

August 8-14, 2011

"See What You're Missing"

Above All - Ohio is pleased to announce a new specialty photography service - infrared imaging! Infrared images can reveal many things that normal photographs cannot. The visible image at the left shows a pretty boring corner of a refrigerated building. The infrared image clearly shows the locations of the metal building's girts and purlins. They show up because (in this case...) heat is transfering from outside to inside.

To the untrained eye, it may appear that there is drastic heat infiltration into this building. However, our on-staff certified thermographer points out that there is only a 4.5° F difference between a "hot spot" and a nearby area. He assures us that this building is actually very well insulated - he found no insulation deficiencies in his scan.

Check out the all new infrared thermography section of our web site to see what infrared imaging can do for you.

An aerial photo of a mountain reservoir and dam in southern West Virginia

August 1-7, 2011

"Mountain Reservoir"

This beautiful reservoir is tucked away in the rugged Appalachian Mountains of southern West Virginia. The dam at the left edge of the photo creates R.D. Bailey Lake near Justice, WV. The dam was completed in 1980 and was built as part of the Federal Flood Control Act of 1962 to prevent the significant flooding damage that the area experienced roughly every two years. According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers website, the seven-mile lake would increase to 22 miles and would contain 66 billion gallons of water under maximum storage conditions.

An aerial view of a freight train crossing a temporary steel bridge near Columbus, OH

July 25-31, 2011

"Timing is Everything"

It's always nice to be in the right place at the right time to get a cool shot such as this CSX train crossing a temporary railroad bridge near Columbus, Ohio.

This particular photo, however, did not happen by chance. It required a lot of coordination between the manufacturer of the bridge, the railroad, and Above All - Ohio to make it happen. (And, as you can see, we succeeded in our efforts!)

If you have an event that you'd like to capture from a unique perspective, give us a call - we'll do whatever it takes to be in the right place at the right time to make sure we preserve your unique moment!

An airborne very high resolution panoramic view of the blue sky between two layers of clouds

July 18-24, 2011 7.20.1969: One small step...

"The Sky's the Limit?"

This week, we mark the 42nd anniversary of Apollo 11. Man first set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969, making the old saying "the sky's the limit" seem a little less dramatic.

Unfortunately for us, we don't have rocket power readily available, so the sky really is the limit for our photography. Fortunately for us, the sky is a really beautiful place to be! This panoramic image was stitched together from 7 individual photos. It has enough resolution to be printed seemlessly up to 4 feet by 9 feet at photographic quality. It's just our way of helping to make the word "dramatic" applicable to the sky again!

An overhead aerial view of tornado damage near Glade Spring, Virginia

July 11-17, 2011

"Tornado Devastation"

Most of what we see from the air is beautiful... Sometimes, however, we come across terrible scenes like this one near Glade Springs, Virginia. Tornadoes touched down there on April 27, 2011, though most of the media coverage centered on the tornadoes from the same storm system that touched down in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Both areas are still rebuilding.

"Island Get Away"

Kelleys Island Venture Resort stands out nicely in the lower center of this late day aerial photo. The resort offers 31 luxury suites, a swimming pool, hot tubs, and a beautifully landscaped rock garden and waterfall.

Far less busy than South Bass Island and Put-in-Bay to the west, Kelley's Island offers a quiet, more laid back atmosphere for those wishing to get away for a day, a weekend, or a whole summer.

According to a timeline on Goodyear's website, the first payroll was $217.86 and the first month's sales were $8,246 (which is about $260,000 in 2011 dollars when adjusted for inflation...). One hundred, thirteen years later, the average monthly sales are reportedly around 1.8 BILLION dollars... From the looks of things here, they are still growing!

Construction season in the northern U.S. is in full swing now that the weather has improved and the days are getting longer. This nearly straight down aerial photo (what we call a "near vertical") shows that two way traffic is maintained on an overpass on Cleveland's east side even though half of the bridge is being completely rebuilt. Drive carefully in construction zones - there are a lot of workers out there doing tough and risky work to keep our roads and highways in good shape. As the signs say here in Ohio, "Give them a brake!"

May 9-15, 2011

"Seidman Cancer Center"

University Hospitals is about to open the Seidman Cancer Center, seen in the upper left corner of this week's aerial photo. The new facility is a 375,000 square foot, "free-standing" cancer hospital and is located in the University Circle area east of downtown Cleveland, Ohio. Seidman will initially have 120 inpatient beds, but has the ability to expand to 150 inpatient beds, which would double UH's current number. In addition to the increased inpatient care capacity, the cancer center is expected to handle about 200,000 outpatient visits per year. The large rectangular structure in the center of the photo is a new parking garage which is needed to handle all of those patients and their caregivers.

"Modern Care"

There is no doubt that many new mothers will debut in this hospital when it is completed... This wide angle aerial photo shows the new Mercy Hospital under construction in the small community of Willard, Ohio. The new facility - scheduled for completion in 2012 - replaces one that is aleady over 80 years old and has reached the limits of expansion. The new hospital will provide residents of the area with state of the art care today and will also allow the hospital to grow and expand in the future. The Willard Hospital is visited by the stork about 90 times each year...

A farmer prepares a field for planting in this panoramic aerial photo taken over rural west-central Ohio. The dark color of the disturbed soil on the left indicates good moisture in soil. Unfortuantely, after this photo was taken, Ohio has been hit with seemingly constant rain - much more moisture than the farmers need! The agricultural season is off to a slow start this year across the Midwest as farmers have just not been able to plant in the now saturated fields.

The International Exposition ("I-X") Center at the Cleveland Hopkins Airport hosts many events throughout the year. Very popular shows include the RV Supershow, the Boat and Fishing Expo, the Home and Garden Expo, and the Cleveland Auto Show. But, perhaps the most anticipated even of the year for kids of all ages is the I-X Indoor Amusement Park which runs the entire month of April (plus a few days in March and May). The centerpiece of the indoor amusement park is the giant ferris wheel, which can be seen sticking through the roof near the center of the facility. The wheel is enclosed by a glass structure allowing riders to get a glimpse of the airport next door.

An aerial view of a large concrete pour in progress in Medina, Ohio

March 28 - April 3, 2011

"Construction Season"

Whether it's orange barrels on the highway or new buildings such as this one being built in Medina, Ohio, warmer weather means more construction. This early morning concrete pour involves a huge pumper truck that can deliver concrete to the entire footprint of the building. The cement mixers unload at one point throughout the pour allowing it to progress smoothly and efficiently. Though the impressive size of the pumper arm can not easily be seen in the photo, the fact that the shadow created by the early morning sun extends beyond the edge of the photo gives us a clue to the height of the apparatus.

Value City Arena) dominates this photo, but is only one of the many athletic facilities located at the corner of Lane Avenue and Olentangy River Road on the northwest side of the campus. At the top center of the photo is the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium where track and field events are held. The gray building to the east is the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. Also visible is Davis Baseball stadium, Buckeye Field (the smaller baseball diamond) and the football practice fields.

Best wishes to the Buckeyes' men's basketball team who will be playing in the Big 10 Tournament this week and preparing for the NCAA tournament as a favorite shortly thereafter!

An aerial view from a helicopter of the Fifth Third bank building in downtown Toledo, Ohio

February 28 - March 6, 2011

"Toledo Skyscraper"

Wide angle "beauty shots" are a great way to show the area surrounding a subject, but sometimes our clients need us to get a little closer. It is dangerous (and illegal) to get this close to a building in an airplane. For shots like these, we must use a helicopter and a high time (i.e., "experienced") helicopter pilot. Though aerials taken from helicopters are more expensive than those taken from our own airplane, the results are often dramatic and worth the premium to many people (especially those who are actively marketing a property for sale or lease). Give us a call today to schedule an up close and personal photo session of your site!

A panoramic aerial view of winter skies and distant snow near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

February 21-27, 2011

"Panormic Winter Sky"

We may be on our way to spring, but the winter storms in the midwest aren't over yet. This panoramic view shows clouds and snow in the distance. We don't particularly like to fly on days like this, but sometimes our clients need their photos right away and can't wait for ideal conditions. We never fly in unsafe conditions, of course, but we do monitor the weather constantly so if there is an opening - even a tiny one - we will take advantage of it to get the job done!

Aerial view of the Niagara River, niagara Falls, New York and Canada

February 14-20, 2011 Happy Valentine's Day!

"Romantic River"

Niagara Falls is a popular destination for honeymooners and (we're guessing...) people celebrating Valentine's Day. This view of the Falls is looking generally south upriver. Rainbow Bridge, one of the most popular places to cross the border between the United States and Canada (for non-commercial traffic, anyway...) is at the bottom of the photo. The American Falls are in the middle of the photo on the left side of the river and the Horseshoe or Canadian Falls are at the top of the photo.

Please check out the Niagara Falls gallery for more photos of the falls.

Aerial view of a trainyard "hump" near Bellevue, Ohio

February 7-13, 2011

"Getting Over the Hump"

At this rail yard near Bellevue, Ohio, trains are taken apart and reassembled to get the freight cars to the right places. Long lines of train cars are de-coupled and pushed up and over a man-made hill. Gravity takes the cars - one by one, evenly spaced - down the hill where operators can switch the cars over to one of several different tracks. There, the cars are re-coupled to other cars bound for destinations along common routes.

We are trying to "get over the hump" ourselves - it has been a long and snowy winter in northern Ohio and we are anxious to fly under blue skies and over green land. If the groundhog was correct last week, it's all downhill to spring now...

Aerial view of the Old Mansfield (Ohio) Reformatory with part of the new prison visible behind it (to the left)

January 31 - February 6, 2011

"Famous Reformatory"

The Ohio State Reformatory (informally known as the "Mansfield Reformatory") is a historic landmark and site of many movies. The most famous movie filmed at this location was of course "The Shawshank Redemption." Other notable movies include "Air Force One" and "Tango and Cash."

The former prison is open for tours in the spring, summer, and fall months. Several different tours are available, including both guided and self-guided tours. See the tours page on the Mansfield Reformatory Preservation Society's web page for more information.

Aerial view of a lumber yard and a very wooded area separated by train tracks in Pennsylvania

January 24-30, 2011

"Splitting Woods"

A train full of colorful shipping containers bisects this photo. On the right side, part of a large lumber yard is visible; on the left side, the natural resources that help keep the lumber yard in business... This photo was taken in mid-summer, 2007, somewhere over western Pennsylvania or eastern Ohio (before we started geo-coding our photos, unfortunately...). We picked this photo this week simply because we're tired of snow and we wanted to see something with a lot of green! Last week was the historical low point of the winter in northern Ohio - this week, the average daily low temperatures begin to climb again!

Elevated view of the Terminal Tower in downtown Cleveland, OH

January 17-23, 2011

"Cleveland's Landmark"

A light haze somewhat washes out the Terminal Tower in this view from the roof of another building in downtown Cleveland. Normally we would enhance and correct photos taken under these conditions, but in this case, we decided we liked the contrast and the "old fashioned" feel that the haze gives to the image.

Aerial view of ice fishing holes drilled into a frozen lake near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

January 10-16, 2011

"Dot-to-Dot?"

These holes drilled into a frozen lake near Pittsburgh sort of looked like a connect the dots puzzle from our airborne vantage point. With the "dots" connected by the footprints of the people fishing, we thought this looked like a figure skater (albeit with some imagination!). What do you see?

Aerial view of the "ice lighthouse" where the Cuyahoga River empties into Lake Erie near downtown Cleveland, Ohio

January 1-9, 2011 Happy New Year!

"Cleveland's Ice Lighthouse"

High winds and cold temperatures combined in December 2010 to cover this lighthouse in solid ice. The lighthouse sits at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River where it empties into Lake Erie. Ground-based photos of the lighthouse made national news just before Christmas, drawing professional and amateur photographers from all over to capture images. A few days after this aerial photo was taken, unseasonably warm temperatures in Ohio caused all of the ice to melt off of the structure.
