An aerial view of the MAPS Museum just west of the Akron-Canton Regional Airport (CAK), North canton, Ohio.

December 22-31, 2014 Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

"Preserving History"

Last December our family visited the MAPS Museum and we featured a photo from inside the museum at the end of the year.

While working near the Akron-Canton Regional Airport this past fall, the wonderful air traffic controllers in the tower allowed us to fly directly over one of the runways to get some aerial photos of the outside of the museum.

Visible in this aerial photo are (among other things...) an F-14 Tomcat, an F-86 Sabre, an F-4 Phantom, an A-7 Corsair II, and even a Russian Mig 21. (For a list of other aircraft on display, please visit the MAPS Museum's web site.)

The volunteers at MAPS (Military Aviation Preservation Society) work hard to preserve history out of respect for those that flew these machines, risking their lives for our freedom. As we do every year, we want to wish all of our active duty servicemen and servicewomen a Merry Christmas and happy holiday season, especially if they are apart from the loved ones. We also ask that you take a moment to think about these people and their families and everything that they are sacrificing for us.

A winter view of a single tree in a snowy field somewhere in northeastern Ohio.

December 15-21, 2014

"Solitude"

We think every aerial photographer has a photo like this in his or her stock photo database.

There's just something about seeing a single tree standing in the middle of a field that makes people want to take photos of it. Especially if the field is evenly snow covered and the tree is casting an intricate shadow like this one...

A winter view of a large trainyard just outside of Columbus, OH.

December 8-14, 2014

"Santa's Sleighs?"

We happened to be flying over the North Pole awhile back and witnessed all of these sleighs being filled with toys by Santa's elves! It looked like there were an awful lot of awesome toys being loaded up, so we hope you made the Nice List this year!

(It's possible that these are train cars and not sleighs, and it's possible this was a scene near Columbus, Ohio, and not the north pole, and it's also possible that not all of these train cars were full of toys... unfortunately. Still, just to be safe, you better continue to be good... Christmas will be here before we know it!)

An oblique aerial photo of the Longaberger Basket Company's unusual headquarters near Newark, Ohio.

December 1-7, 2014 07 DEC 1941: Infamy.

"World's Largest Basket"

The Longaberger Basket Company's headquarters near Newark, Ohio, was featured once before as one of our first featured stock photos.

We flew by again this fall and thought we'd get a different angle and show it a little more close up. Unfortunately, once again, the photo just doesn't do the basket justice - you really need to drive by this place on Ohio State Route 16, east of Newark, to get a real appreciation for the size of this thing!

A steep oblique aerial view of a discarded pumpkins, squash, and gourds in rural Ohio.

November 24-30, 2014 Happy Thanksgiving! Gobble 'til you wobble!

"More Leftovers"

We posted a photo of this field a few years ago but it caught our eye again this year a little later in the season.

This is what happens to squash, pumpkins, and ornamental gourds that for one reason or another can't be sold to stores. Perhaps they are the wrong size, the wrong shape, or perhaps they just got too old waiting to be sold.

It may seem like a waste to dump all of these, but they will be broken down and the nutrients they store will be incorporated back into the soil making the next generation of plants stronger and healthier. The birds and other wildlife also benefit from this composting - they feast on seeds and rinds and stash them away for the winter.

An aerial view of a collection of planes at a rural Ohio farm.

November 17-23, 2014

"Airplane Farm"

Some people are happy with a 2 or 3 car garage. Some people - like the owners of this farm in rural Ohio near Xenia - like a little bit more space. Such as a hangar...

These airplanes and airplane parts caught our eye between while flying between sites in southwestern Ohio this fall. At least one plane - the white and red one on the right - appears to be airworthy. The others are in various stages of restoration or disassembly. Not visible in this photo is a nearby grass runway.

A farm in the country with your own hangar and runway and your plane parked outside your front door? Yes - I'd say we're a little bit envious...

An aerial view of a huge flag waving above a local RV dealer.

November 10-16, 2014 THANK YOU, Veterans!

"A Salute to Veterans"

This giant flag at a Camping World RV store in Perrysburg, Ohio, was standing nearly straight out in strong winds today.

The flag probably flies regularly at the store, but it stuck out as a fitting salute on this trip as Veteran's Day is this week (November 11).

We would also like to salute all of the veterans out there and say THANK YOU for your service!

A close up aerial view of a cliff at a former mining site near Coshocton, Ohio, and a little lingering fall color.

November 3-9, 2014

"Edge of Fall"

A few trees in Coshocton County are stubbornly hanging on to their color in this late fall photo of a former mining site turned nature preserve. They also appear to be hanging on to the edge of this cliff left by the mining operations.

The Simco Wildlife Area was featured as a double "Stock Photo of the Week" in 2012 suring the peak of a spectacular fall season.

A wide angle aerial view of northern Ohio's Lake Erie coast line showing Huron, Sandusky, Cedar Point, Port Clinton, and the Lake Erie Islands.

October 27 - November 2, 2014 Trick or treat!!

"Fall Along the Lakeshore"

The trees in northern Ohio are hanging on to some color but they are quickly losing their leaves.

In this wide angle aerial view of the Lake Erie shoreline, you can see the city of Huron centered in the frame. Moving along the shore to the west, you can see Sandusky on the left and Cedar Point near the center. Port Clinton and Catawba are visible in the distance as are the Lake Erie isalnds on the right side of the frame near the horizon. If you look very carefully, you can see Perry's Monument rising up from South Bass Island.

A nearly vertical overhead view of pumpkins, gourds, and various squashes awaiting processing at a facility near North Fairfield, Ohio.

October 20-26, 2014

"Fall Ornamentals"

Fall is the busiest time of year at this packaging and shipping facility owned by D.R. Walcher Farms in North Fairfield, Ohio.

Visible here in this nearly straight down aerial view of the facility are bins and bins of pumpkins, decorative gourds, and several varieties of squash.

The vegetables come in by the semi-load on flatbed trailers. They are washed, sorted, and packaged before shipping to customers throughout the country, again by the semi-load.

An aerial view of Goodyear's blimp base in Mogadore, Ohio and their newest blimp - Wingfoot One - shortly after landing.

October 13-19, 2014

"Home for a New Blimp"

One of the most recognizeable corporate symbols in the world, the Goodyear blimp has been a familiar site at many sporting and other events throughout the United States since the 1920's.

Pictured here is the home base for Goodyear's blimps - a large hangar beside Wingfoot Lake in Mogadore, Ohio.

To the right of the hangar, you can see Goodyear's newest airship - named "Wingfoot One" after an online naming contest - shortly after landing after a test flight. The new blimp, capable of speeds up to 73 miles per hour, will officially go into service in the Spring of 2015.

If you look even closer, you can see downtown Akron in the distance; it is directly above the blimp, near the horizon.

October 6-12, 2014

"Finish Line"

Canal Park, normally the home of the Akron Rubber Ducks minor league baseball team, is seen in this aerial photo being prepared for the Akron Marathon and Half Marathon.

The running events were held on Saturday, September 27, under beautiful and ideal weather conditions. Canal Park served as finish line for the runners.

An aerial photo of Ohio Stadium in Columbus prior to a football game.

September 29 - October 5, 2014

"Buckeye Game Day"

Ohio State fans love their Buckeyes. This aerial photo of Ohio Stadium in Columbus was taken about 6 hours before kickoff last Saturday morning and the tailgaters can already be seen staking out their favorite spots at the edges of the parking lots surrounding the stadium.

The game they were preparing for was against the Cincinnati Bearcats. The Buckeyes bested their in-state rivals by a final score of 50-28 to improve their record to 3-1.

A steep oblique (nearly vertical) aerial view of the Victory Shaft monument in downtown Mt. Gilead, Ohio.

September 22-28, 2014

"Sundial?"

Right in the center of two intersecting streets in downtown Mount Gilead, Ohio (in Morrow County), there is an obelisk that drivers must navigate around. The street running (more-or-less...) east-west is Ohio Route 95 or High Street. The north-south street is Ohio Route 61/U.S. Route 42 or Main Street.

The monument is called the "Victory Shaft" (sometimes referred to as the "Victory Memorial Shaft") and was presented to the county by the U.S. Government for selling more war bonds per capita than any other county in the country. It was erected in 1919, shortly after the end of World War I.

This early fall, mid-morning photo suggests that the monument could make a great sundial. (At least, if they could figure out a way to keep the tire tracks from marring the face of it...)

Aerial photo of fall fields in Ohio showing many different colors and textures.

September 15-21, 2014

"Prettier Fields"

Last week we featured a "brown field" site that wasn't nearly as pretty as these actual brown fields.

Agriculture is a huge business in Ohio and there is a wide variety of crops that are planted here. From grains such as wheat and corn to vegetables and produce such as lettuce, radishes, and peppers to squash and pumpkins and decorative gourds -- you can find it all growing here in Ohio.

The variety of crops makes our views out the window beautiful. Even though the terrain is realtively flat and featureless, all of the different crops create a patchwork of different colors and textures throught the planting, growing, and harvesting seasons.

Aerial view of the site of the former GM stamping plant in Ontario, OH, near Mansfield.

September 8-14, 2014

"Brown Field"

"Brown field" sites are what real estate professionals call sites that were once developed but are now vacant and awaiting redevelopment. (This is opposed to "green field" sites which - you might infer - are those that have never been developed.)

This somewhat unremarkable aerial photo is not interesting for what it is but rather what used to be here. This is the site of a former GM (General Motors) stamping plant in Ontario, OH, just outside of Mansfield.

In June of 2009, GM filed for bankruptcy and announced the plant would close in 2010. It had opened in 1955. In December, 2012, the site was purchased and was rumored to be slated to become a "modern multi-tenant business generator." However, as you can see, the site remains empty.

If you are interested in an aerial view of the plant before it was demolished, you can find one in our 2012 Stock Photo of the Week archive.

Aerial view of an interesting pattern in a harvested field.

September 1-7, 2014 9.1.14: Take a break this Labor Day! You've earned it!

"Harvest Time Again"

While most people take a day off for the Labor Day holiday, Ohio's farmers are just starting the huge job of the fall harvest.

When the harvest begins, the fields around northern Ohio really start to look interesting. It's always surprising the number of different patterns that we find.

Hopefully, we'll catch some more patterns to feature here this fall. Check back often!

Aerial view of Rocky River, Ohio, looking out towards Lake Erie.

August 25-31, 2014

"Right Around the Corner"

Fall colors are starting to come out - call us right away if you want nice "green" aerials! September is your last chance for them before next May! (Well, at least here in Ohio and other northern states...)

This recent aerial photo of Rocky River shows some of the fall colors. The river runs between the suburban towns of Rocky River and Lakewood, Ohio, and empties into a very blue Lake Erie to the north. The predominant bridges seen in the photo are Interstate 90 and Hilliard Blvd. Less obvious are the bridges to the north where U.S. 20 and U.S. 6 cross the river.

August 18-24, 2014

"Back to School Time"

It's almost the end of summer already (where did the time go?) and that means it's time to start thinking about hitting the books again for many students.

This aerial view of the University of Pittsburgh shows its proximity to downtown. This view is looking almost straight west from about 1,500 feet above the campus.

Aerial view of green algae in Lake Erie near Toledo, Ohio, prior to the summer toxic algae bloom that shut down the citiy's water supply for days.

August 11-17, 2014

"Blooming Water"

Streaks of green algae can be seen in this aerial photo of Lake Erie near Monroe, Michigan, in late June. This is an ominous warning sign of what happened last week.

The toxic algae (or "algal") bloom in Lake Erie shut down the municipal water supply of Toledo, Ohio, just south of this location. The shutdown made international news.

August 4-10, 2014

"Cleveland's National Park"

Ohio State Route 82 crosses the Cuyahoga Valley National Park near Brecksville.

This bridge is a landmark to those who use the park's popular Towpath trail for running, walking, and biking.

This photo of the bridge taken several years ago in the fall is one of the most popular images on our site.

A wide angle aerial view of the Cuyahoga River in downtown Cleveland, OH.

July 28 - August 3, 2014

"New Bridge"

The section of a new lift bridge seen in the top photo will be loaded onto a barge in the Cuyahoga River this week and floated downstream to Columbus Street, where two towers have been constructed on either side of the river.

The lower photo offers a wider view of the project - the lift section can be seen towards the upper left corner of the photo (to the right of river, near the blue-ish colored bridge) while the two lift towers can be seen near the lower right corner (one on either side of the river behind the white bridge).

The improvements in the 2-phase modernization plan include larger video scoreboards, additional seating, better site lines, and an improved audio system. More photos and a story from the Cleveland Plain Dealer can be found here.

A low and close helicopter aerial view of construction going on at First Energy Stadium, home of the Cleveland Browns.

July 21-27, 2014

"Stadium Improvements"

As training camps across the country open, we are reminded that the football season is just around the corner. None of the workers seen here at First Energy Stadium (formerly known as Cleveland Browns Stadium) needs to be reminded of that, though. They are diligently working to improve the fan experience at the stadium this year.

The improvements in the 2-phase modernization plan include larger video scoreboards, additional seating, better site lines, and an improved audio system. More information on the project can be found on the official project site.

This photo was taken from a helicopter during a recent shoot downtown. Also visible in the photo are the sprinklers working to get the turf in shape for opening day.

A distant aerial view of the Neil Armstrong Airport, near the astronaut's hometown of Wapakoneta, OH, in Auglaize County.

July 14-20, 2014 7.20.1969: 45 years - can we go back yet??

"Hometown Airport"

This small town in Auglaize County (west-central Ohio) is New Knoxville. If you've never heard of it, perhaps you have heard of another small town less than 10 miles away - Wapakoneta, Ohio. If you've never heard of THAT town, surely you have heard of its most famous resident - Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first human being to set foot on the moon.

The airport -- clearly visible in this early fall aerial -- is appropriately named Neil Armstrong Airport (airport identifier AXV). This oblique aerial photo was taken from several miles away as we were flying between sites last September.

An aerial view of the nearby Armstrong Air & Space Museum in Wapakoneta can be seen in our 2009 Stock Photo of the Week gallery.

A steep oblique overhead view of the Polaris Parkway and Interstate 71 interchange on the north side of Columbus, OH.

July 7-13, 2014

"Starburst"

Urban planners took the name of this exit off of I-71 in Columbus, Ohio, into consideration when they designed this starburst-like landscape pattern. This is Polaris Parkway.

"Polaris" is, of course, another name for the North Star - a bright beacon of light in the night sky which helped keep many explorers over land and sea on course to their destination.

The Polaris mall and its surrounding array of restaurants, movie theaters, and specialty shops is a destination in and of itself to many people, not only in Columbus, but all over Ohio. It is located - appropriately - on the north side of Columbus.

A panoramic aerial view of The Ohio State Univeristy's main campus in Columbus, Ohio, taken at sunset.

June 30 - July 6, 2014 7.04.14: Happy Fourth of July!

"Natural Fireworks"

The sunset after a stormy day is often spectacular as seen in this aerial panoramic view of The Ohio State University's main campus in Columbus, Ohio.

This photo was taken just as the sun was setting on an early August evening a couple of years ago. We were fortunate to be on assignment nearby when we got to witness this scene.

A steep oblique aerial view Smith Brothers in Medina, Ohio, a provider of mulch and other landscaping supplies.

June 23-29, 2014

"Much Mulch"

As can be seen in this steep oblique aerial view, entire semi-trailer loads of a variety of mulch and other landscaping materials are ready for loading and delivery from Smith Bros.

This facility is located just north of Medina, Ohio, but Smith Bros. deliveres to a wide area of northeastern and north central Ohio.

We're always looking for interesting sites and textures as we fly from assignment to assignment. We thought that the different colors of wood and stone mulch and the geometry of the facility stood out and made for an interesting photo. What do you think? Let us know!

An oblique aerial view of downtown Pittsburgh, PA, looking east.

June 16-22, 2014

"Pittsburgh Portrait"

A late afternoon visit to Pittsburgh recently provided us with the opportunity to get some nice stock photography of the downtown area.

This view, looking to the east from the origin of the Ohio River, was one of the best. The sun was shining on the buildings and there were a few fair weather cumulus clouds around the area to add interest to the sky.

As with all of the photos on our web site, this image is available for purchase - either as a print or as a license for use as a digital image. As with most of the photos we feature here, multiple angles are available if this is not exactly what you are looking for (for example, we also have this view in a landscape orientation and we have similar views looking at downtown from other directions...) Please contact us if you are looking for something in particular or if you would like to use one of our stock images.

An aerial view of The GateKeeper roller coaster at Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH.

June 9-15, 2014 6.14.14: Flag Day - fly it proudly! 6.15.14: Happy Father's Day!

"GateKeeper"

This aerial view shows thrill seekers on the GateKeeper "wing coaster" passing through the second keyhole of the ride, just above the main entrance to Cedar Point. The amusement park is located in Sandusky, Ohio.

We had this image picked to be featured as our Stock Photo of the week a couple weeks ago - long before this past weekend's unfortunate water main break. The break caused the park to be closed on Saturday and Sunday - two days that would have been some of the busiest of the year as most schools were out and the weather was absolutely perfect.

Cedar Point is doing everything it can to make up for the inconvenience to their guests, including offering refunds and honoring Saturday's and Sunday's tickets any other day this season.

An aerial view of a farmer preparing a field for planting; near Greenwich, Ohio.

June 2-8, 2014

"Preparing the Land"

An unusually cold winter and wet spring here in Northern Ohio delayed the spring planting for many farmers.

This farmer is making raised beds that will be populated with pepper plants. The raised beds ensure that any water from heavy rains during the growing season will drain away quickly rather than sitting at the base of the plants where it can kill them.

Just because the plants will be put out into the fields later does not necessarily mean the harvest will be late. The seeds were planted at the normal time and have been happily growing in greenhouses ever since (refer to the Stock Photo of the Week from April 28...).

An aerial view of the huge American flag on Memorial Day, 2014, at the Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, OH.

"Remember."

This was the scene this afternoon -- Memorial Day, 2014 -- at Western Reserve National Cemetery near Rittman, Ohio. It was a little cloudy this afternoon, but there was a break in the cloud shadows right over the flag.

We remember those who gave their lives so we can be free. We thank them and the families they left behind for their sacrifice.

A low and close view of a marina in Cleveland, Ohio.

May 19-25, 2014

"Summer is on the Way"

After a long cold winter here in northern Ohio, boaters and landlubbers alike are ready for summer (and so are pilots, by the way!).

This is a low and close view of a marina in Cleveland, Ohio, taken about this time two years ago. The view isn't much different today - boats are being put back into the water after having been winterized and stored on land since the fall.

As inviting as the water looks, you'll want to stay in the boat. The water temperatures are still in the upper 40's and low 50's. On May first of this year, the water temperature was 32 degrees (was it even water??). In 2012, the water temperature on May 1 was 46 degrees!

An unusual site of a train in water; near Bellevue, Ohio.

May 12-18, 2014

"Secret Project?"

Word has it that due to excessive spring rains here in northern Ohio, Norfolk Southern Railway has begun development of "boat trains" to ensure timely delivery of goods throughout the region.

OK, we might have made that up, but it might not be a bad idea considering the rain we have gotten around here recently. This photo was not actually taken recently - it was taken in the spring of 2012 near NSR's train yard in Bellevue, Ohio. The recent rain reminded us of this unusual site, however, and it seemed like an appropriate time to share it.

On a serious note, flooding has unforunately damaged many properties and roads throughout the region. If you are ever in need of aerial or ground-based photographs to document any damage or losses due to flooding, fire, or other causes, be sure to contact us right away for fast, professional service. We are on call 24/7.

Thanks to longer days and warmer temperatures, things are turning green in northern Ohio (finally...).

A nearly vertical / straight down aerial view of greenhouses in Celeryville, OH.

April 28 - May 4, 2014

"Don't Throw Stones"

This unusual view is what you see when you look nearly straight down from above glass greenhouses.

Farmers in Celeryville, Ohio - sometimes referred to as "Ohio's Salad Bowl" - start their crops in late winter inside greenhouses such as the two at the bottom of this photo. The glass roofs allow as much natural sunlight to reach the seedlings as possible. The greenhouses are also kept warm by the sunlight (hence the origination of the term "greenhouse effect" obviously...) allowing plants to start growing well before they could survive outisde in Ohio's cold and unpredictable spring weather.

The greenhouse at the top of the photos does not appear to contain any growing plants, but rather appears to be used to store some vehicles.

An oblique aerial photo of the Medina County Recycling Center's Central Processing Facility near Seville, Ohio.

April 21-27, 2014 04.22.2014: Earth Day -- let's take care of our planet!

"Closer to Home"

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. In celebration of Earth Day, this week's featured photo is of the Medina County Recycling Center (also known as the Central Processing Facility).

All of the garbage in our home county is taken to here where the recyclables are sorted out so that the least amount of refuse possible gets sent to the landfill. The piles of mulch visible behind the building are made from recycled pallets. Organic material collected is composted and residents are free to pick some up for use in their gardens. Other materials are sold to help pay for the facility's operating costs.

The recycling center is located in southern Medina county, on Lake Road, near the intersection of Interstate 71 and US Route 224.

An aerial view of the huge Vehicle Assembly Building and launch pads 39A and 39B at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral, FL.

April 14-20, 2014 04.20.2014: Wishing you a joyous Easter!

"Far Out"

People often ask us where we fly or how far we go to get photos. We always tell them the same thing - we'll go anywhere we can make it work for our customers!

Here is an example of a photo we took far from home - this is NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. The huge building in the foreground is the Vehicle Assembly Building, one of the largest buildings by volume in the world. (I have *never* seen a photo that accurately gives an impression of just how big it is -- including this one! It's one of those things you just have to see in person.)

In the distance are Launch Pads 39A and 39B. From these two launch pads, every manned mission to the moon and every Space Shuttle was launched. Currently, the launch pads are being used to send supply ships to the International Space Station.

An aerial view of a huge stockpile of water line in Willard, OH.

April 7-13, 2014

"Pipeline"

Wherever we fly, we're always on the lookout for unusual or interesting sites.

This construction site caught our eye recently - it is a huge stock pile of water pipe waiting to be installed in Willard, Ohio.

Although we don't know the details of the project, the last time we were in the area, we noticed work being done and some of this pipe being installed along the edge of the Willard airport property. Based on the size of these piles, it must be quite a large project for the city.

An aerial view of Canal Park, home of the Akron Rubber Ducks minor league baseball team; Akron, Ohio.

March 31 - April 6, 2014

"Play Ball...?"

This week, the 2014 Major League Baseball season begins. Last week, here in northern Ohio, it didn't feel or look much like baseball weather...

Fortunately, the ground crew for the Akron RubberDucks (formerly known as the "Akron Aeros...") was prepared for the approximately 4 inches of snow that fell early last week. They had the infield tarped, which made for an interesting and unusual aerial view for us when they peeled it back in the afternoon!

An aerial view of the miles of beach lining Hilton Head Island, SC.

March 24-30, 2014

"Spring Break!"

Miles of beach front make Hilton Head Island in South Carolina a very popular tourist attraction all year, though the spring break season is especially popular.

Located at the southern tip of South Carolina (Savannah, Georgia, is the closest major city and the airport of choice for most people flying in...), the island has many hotels and condos available for rent with sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean.

After the long, cold winter than much of the United States has endured this year, we are guessing HHI may be even more crowded than normal this spring!

An aerial view of a 4-leaf clover highway interchange near Dublin, OH.

March 17-23, 2014 03.17.2014: Happy St. Patrick's Day!

"Planned or Just the Luck of the Irish?"

Many highway interchanges make use of the safe and efficient "clover leaf" design for the on- and off- ramps, but a lack of real esate usually prevents engineers from making leaves in all four quadrants.

The 4-leaf clover interchange visible in this oblique aerial photo just happens to be located near Dublin (Ohio, not Ireland...) making us wonder if it was planned that way from the beginning or if the city planners were just lucky that there was enough room for it.

In a double-dose of good luck, this photo was taken while the annual Dublin Irish Festival was going on last year. The festival is held during the first weekend of August each summer.

An aerial photo of Navy Pier and part of downtown Chicago, Illinois, including the iconic John Hancock Building.

March 10-16, 2014

"Navy Pier"

It's difficult to think of St. Patrick's Day without thinking of Chicago, IL, so we are again featuring an aerial photo of a Chicagoland landmark.

Navy Pier is the site of many attractions including many fun amusement park rides and the Chicago Children's Museum. It is also the starting point for many tours of the city -- some by boat, some by bicycle, and even some by Segway...

The somewhat darker patch of water at the left edge of this photo is where the Chicago River -- which is traditionally dyed green for St. Patrick's Day -- has been filled by the waters of Lake Michigan since the year 1900 when the natural flow of the river was reversed by an ambitious civil engineering project.

An aerial view of the Cleveland Medical Mart and Convention Center; downtown Cleveland, Ohio.

March 3-9, 2014

"New Digs"

The new Cleveland Medical Mart and Convention Center, recently opened in downtown Cleveland, is not really best shown in an aerial view...

Most of the facility is located below ground level, allowing the area formerly known as "Mall B" to retain much of its open, grassy feel. (Click on the Mall B link above to see an aerial view of the area prior to construction. Click on this link to see an aerial view of the convention center while it was under construction.)

The City of Cleveland hopes to be site for the Republican National Convention in 2016 and the brand new Convention Center is sure to be a key selling point in their bid.

An aerial view of an approaching winter storm front at the end of January, 2014. Near Mansfield, Ohio.

February 24 - March 2, 2014

"Approaching Front"

Well, it was nice to see a green photo here last week, but it's back to the realities of winter this week. Let's hope it's just for a few more weeks!

We took this photo of an approaching cold front on our way home after a long day of shooting last month. Always mindful of the weather, we had to work fast to get our customers' photos and get back to the hangar before this cold front went through.

The front pictured is the one that had high winds that created "snow rollers" across northern Ohio.

A steep oblique aerial view of a track and associated field event markings at the University of Akron (Ohio).

February 17-23, 2014

"Let the Games Begin!"

Yes - we realize that it is the WINTER Olympic games that are going on this week in Sochi, Russia, but frankly, we think you'll get enough opportunity to see photos and video of cold, snowy things over the course of the games so we decided to go with something different here.

We were looking through the tens of thousands of images in our stock photo archives for something a little more "green" to break up the monotony of this unusually harsh winter. This nice green photo of the track at the University of Akron marked out for various field events caught our eye.

A snowy winter aerial view of the the mountains in northwestern West Virginia.

February 10-16, 2014 2.14.14: Happy Valentine's Day!

"Secluded Area"

Looking for a secluded place to get away for Valentine's Day?

The mountains of West Virginia certainly offer a place to get away from civilization. With trees and hills stretching as far as the eye can see, it's safe to assume no one would bother you for awhile here.

Of course, if you're the type who likes room service (or even a room at all for that matter...), this area may not be for you. We could only see one tiny building in this photo - can you find it?

A snowy winter aerial view of the passenger terminal at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (KCLE), Cleveland, Ohio.

February 3-9, 2014

"Travel Problems"

The news this week out of Cleveland, Ohio, was not good for air travelers...

First, the typical northern Ohio winter weather caused many flight delays and cancellations. Then, the news broke that United Airlines would be eliminating its hub operation here - at the Cleveland Hopkins airport.

This announcement means a 60% reduction in the number of United flights in and out of Cleveland, hundreds of job losses, and less choice for travellers arriving to and departing from Cleveland.

It is uncertain whether other airlines will step up and add flights to fill some of gaps, but we're guessing they will to some extent. However, as with our winter weather, we'll just have to wait and see...

Aerial view of Summa Field at InfoCision Stadium as the Akron Zips prepare to take on the Toledo Rockets for the final game of the 2013 season.

January 27 - February 2, 2014

"End of the Season"

This weekend, the 2013-2014 NFL season comes to an end in East Rutherford, NJ. It will probably be colder there than it was in Akron, OH, during this game at the end of November, but there will be a lot more fans in the stands, for sure!

The Akron Zips did not have the season they were hoping for - they ended up at 5-7 and placed 4th out of 6 in the East Division of the MAC (Mid-American Conference). They were able to end the season on a high note with their win over the Toledo Rockets.

We happened to be flying above "Summa Field at InfoCision Stadium" while the teams were warming up for the game. It was a cold and snowy day and it appeared that more players than fans were at the game, but the fans that did show up were treated to a thrilling game. The Zips beat the Rockets 31-29. We can only hope that this weekend's big game between the Broncos and the Seahawks will be just as exciting!

A winter aerial view of some unusal land features, visible only when the leaves are off of the trees; near Cadiz, in east-central Ohio.

January 20-26, 2014

"Hidden Patterns"

We're not sure how these unusual parallel ridges near Cadiz, Ohio, were made, but since they are so uniform, we're guessing they are not a natural land feature. Perhaps these ridges were the result of some type of mining operation? (If you have any other ideas or know for sure what is going on here, please let us know...)

One thing we do know for sure is that these ridges are not visible most of the year. When the trees are full of leaves, the canopy hides the features of the land below. This is the reason that most aerial mapping is done in the winter and early spring. Generally, it is done when there is no snow on the ground, but as can be seen here, a thin layer can enhance the images and show trails and other features more clearly.

An oblique aerial photograph of the Baha'i House of worship, just north of Chicago, IL.

January 13-19, 2014

"Place of Worship"

Started in 1921, completed in 1953, added to the National Register of historic Places in 1978, and named one of the "Seven Wonders of Illinois" in 2007, the Baha'i House of Worship is a beautiful landmark in Wilmette, IL (just north of Chicago), along the shore of Lake Michigan.

As impressive as it is beautiful, the central auditorium stands 138 feet high. The building is open to visitors 365 days a year and allows people of all faiths a place for quiet meditation.

Shown here in early spring, the gardens and fountains surrounding the temple are unfortunately not seen in their full beauty.

More information can be found on the temple's official web site or on its wikipedia page.

A wide angle aerial view of downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, looking south at the three-rivers area.

January 6-12, 2014

"Pittsburgh from the North"

This wide angle aerial view of downtown Pittsburgh was taken last January. Getting really good wide angle views from the north looking south takes good planning and cooperation from Mother Nature, especially in the winter months.

The reason is that during the winter, the sun is low in the sky, even at "high noon." This makes taking photos looking south (into the sun) very difficult unless you get a day like the day this photo was taken - one with a high, thin overcast.

A ground-based night time architectural photo of the Wright Flyer replica at the Akron-Canton Regional Airport's Aviation Park.

January 1-5, 2014 Happy New Year!

"Happy New Year!"

We decided to celebrate the dawn of the New Year with a photo representing another dawn that is important to us -- the dawn of powered flight. This ground-based, night-time photo is of a replica of the Wright Flyer.

This full-scale, all-metal sculpture is the centerpiece of the Frederick J. Krum Aviation Park located at the Akron-Canton Regional Airport. Around the publicly accessible park are bricks and plaques honoring local individuals and companies who have contributed to civilian and/or military aviation in Ohio.

This photo was taken just before Christmas, so the Wright Flyer was lined with white Christmas lights.
