November 5, 2012: The latest news from Above All - Ohio...
Aerial Infrared Roof Inspections  --   In the wake of hurricane / "super storm" Sandy, we have been busy assessing both visible damage with regular photography and hidden damage via aerial infrared scanning.

We are available to fly anywhere that was affected by the storm affordably. Our clients include building and property owners, roofing compaines, engineering and inspection comapnies, and government entities. Please contact us if we can be of service to you!

Affordable services and discounts  --   We offer discounts on follow-up visits to sites that we have photographed and/or scanned with our infrared camera. As long as your account is current and in good standing, you will be elgible for the discount on all return visits to the same site. This allows you to document the progress of the repairs and verify that they were done correctly. Please let us know when you call if you will be needing multiple visits. We will work with you to ensure you get the best service and value.

A quick IR scan can pay for itself - quickly!   --  In addition to our aerial infrared scanning services, Above All - Ohio also offers fast, affordable infrared scans for residential customers and small businesses. We can scan your home, office, or other commercial building to find hidden problems such as energy-wasting insulation deficiencies and areas where moisture may be infiltrating causing damage and health issues (mold thrives in wet walls!).

As the winter months arrive, finding and correcting insulation deficiencies is very important. Heat escaping from your home or building is literally the same thing as throwing money away. Wouldn't that money be better spent on your friends and family this holiday season or perhaps reinvested into your property?

The sooner you find and correct energy-wasting problems, the sooner you will start saving energy and the sooner you will start saving money! Please contact us today to set up your inspection or to get more information!

"Black Friday"  --   Owners of retail stores, shopping centers, and malls and commercial real estate professionals who are listing such properties for sale or lease like to schedule aerial photos when the parking lots are full and the stores are busy. The day after Thanksgiving is right around the corner and it is the best day of the year for aerials of these properties. Unfortuantely, we can only cover so many of these sites in a day, and we can only cover them if the weather cooperates.

Give us a call to get on our schedule! There is no risk in reserving a spot - if the weather does not cooperate, you will not be charged at all.

The leaves are almost gone  --   Most of the leaves have fallen from the trees in most of Ohio as of the end of October. The high winds resulting from hurricane / superstorm Sandy sped up the process here and in much of the northeast region of the country.

November and December are good months to have aerials taken of properties or buildings that are normally obscured by leafy trees or of wooded areas where you may want to see paths or land features. The grass will be green for most of these months which will make the photos more colorful. If we happen to get any snow, it will most likely disappear quickly and there won't be piles of plowed snow in parking lots which can be undesirable in aerial images. Contact us now to schedule your end-of-the-year aerials!

Let us help you!  --   Whatever your requirements are for aerial or ground-based photography, scheduling as far in advance as possible the best way to ensure you will receive the highest quality photos.

Unfortuantely, we know that you can't always plan as far ahead as you'd like to. In those cases, rest assured that we will do everything we can to help! Since we own our own plane, we can respond quickly to your needs - in some cases, we can take an order in the morning and deliver photos in the afternoon!

The bottom line is this: Tell us your needs and we'll take care of you!

Reminder  --   All of the photos on our web site are reduced in size (drastically reduced in size...) and compressed for faster loading in your web browser. The photos we deliver to clients are much bigger and sharper than the ones you see online. The images we deliver do not have our name, copyright notices, or watermarks on them. If you would like a sample image, just ask!

Website Updates  --   Fall has been beautiful and busy so we haven't had time to update our web site as often as we would like. We try to keep up with posting our "Stock Photo of the Week" here and on our Facebook page, but sometimes we get a little behind on that as well.

About our slogan  --   You may have noticed that we've recently begun using the slogan "Our images will work for you." We want to emphasize to our customers and future customers that our number one goal is to help you and give you photos and images that have value beyond just being "pretty" or "cool" pictures.

Whether you need to sell a large building or a large piece of land, or whether you need to document a large construction project, or whether you need to evaluate a roof, an electrical box, or mechanical equipment in infrared, our images will help! It's a cliche, but our photos really are worth a thousand words (or more...). Let us know how we can help you and how our images can start working for you.

Copyright Reminder  --   All of the photos, graphics, written words, and page layouts/designs that you see on our web site were created by us and are all copyrighted material. You may use the photos we have posted on our site freely for personal use only as long as you do not modify them in any way and our contact information (web site address) and copyright notice remain intact, visible, and readable. If you need larger images or images adjusted in any way to fit your needs, please contact us. We will be happy to help you.

Unfortunately, we have recently found instances of some of our photos being used without credit on other companies' web sites. We have even found our competitors using words from our FAQ and other pages word-for-word on their own web sites! Both of these are examples of copyright infringement and we will take action whenever we find them.

We are a for profit company and the use of our images or words without the proper license and payment is strictly prohibited. Like you, we deserve to be paid for the work we do - which includes the services we provide, the images we create, and the words we author - if they are of use and/or value to you. We do not steal from other people or ask anyone to do work for us for free.

Although we do donate goods or services from time to time to charitable organizations, please do not ask us to work for free or steal from us for your own personal gain or for the gain of your company. Contrary to what you may think, stealing our intellectual property does hurt us.

Aerial Infrared Roof Inspections  --   All flat roofs will eventually wear out and develop leaks. How do you know where the leaks are? (The roof leak is rarely directly above where the water finds its way out of the ceiling!) How do you know how many leaks you have? (One leak inside the building may have multiple sources!) How do you know whether it's best to replace the whole roof or just repair sections of it? (We can give you information that will help you decide!)

An aerial infrared scan can save you a lot of time, a lot of money, and a lot of unnecessary repairs. It can also expose problems in the roof that may go undetected for a long time before any visible signs of damage become apparent. When the symptoms of the problem do show up, the corrective action and repairs will be more extensive and expensive than if the problem had been caught early on.

Our infrared images have helped our customers evaluate roof conditions, locate trapped moisture, and have been used as part of due diligence efforts for real estate transactions. Contact us today to discuss your needs or to see sample imagery from recent jobs!

The leaves are falling quickly!  --   Wow - the fall colors came quickly and were spectacular this year! Although we are now past the peak colors here in northern Ohio, most of the trees are still hanging on to their leaves. However, we expect the trees to be bare around first week of November. Of course, a hard rain or a windy day can knock the leaves off at any time.

Novemember and December are good months to get aerials taken of properties or buildings that are normally obscured by leafy trees. The grass will be green for awhile longer and if we happen to get any snow, it will most likely disappear quickly and there won't be piles of plowed snow in parking lots. Contact us now if aerials with these characteristics are of interest to you!

LAST CALL for green Summer Aerials!  --   We are already seeing some color in the trees out there. With the early spring and drought conditions this summer, we expect the trees to turn color and lose their leaves earlier than normal this year.

Summer is absolutely the best time to have aerial photos taken that will be displayed continuously throughout the year. Plentiful sunshine, minimal shadows, and lots of green make summer photos look good all year long, in every season. If you want photos with lots of green, please do not delay your order - call us today!

September is usually a very good month to get aerials. There are lots of different shades of green and some yellows and browns start to show up as well. We see a lot of nice texture on the ground. The cool, clean air is also beneficial for aerials - the summer haze and dust quickly (and thankfully) becomes a distant memory!

As always, scheduling as far in advance as possible is your best bet to get the highest quality photos. After you describe your needs, we can pick the right day for you and get the best results possible.

Of course, we know that you can't always plan ahead, and in those cases, rest assured that we will do everything we can to help! Since we own our own plane, we can respond quickly to your needs - on more than one occaision, we have gotten an order in the morning and delivered the photos in the afternoon.

Website Updates  --   As we warned in our last news update, this time of year is busy for us and we don't have time to update our web site as often as we would like. However, with a little break in the schedule, we are now working on getting things up to date.

You may have noticed that we've recently begun using the slogan "Our images will work for you." We want to emphasize to our customers and prospective customers that our number one goal is to help you and give you images that have value beyond just being "pretty pictures."

Whether you need to sell a large building or a large piece of land, or whether you need to document a large construction project, or whether you need to evaluate a roof, an electrical box, or production line equipment in infrared, our images will help. It's a cliche, but our photos really are worth a thousand words (or more!). Let us know how we can help you and how our images can start working for you.

We still have not been able to update our 2012 blog - we hope to update it at least a couple more times before the end of the year...

A quick IR scan can pay for itself - quickly!  --   Above All - Ohio offers fast, affordable infrared scan for residential customers. For as little as $97, homeowners can get a quick scan of their entire home to find hidden problems, including energy-wasting insulation and building deficiencies. Within 24 hours of the inspection, we will e-mail a report to you which will include both infrared images and regular photos that show areas of potential concern. The report will also explain what we saw in easy-to-understand language. Each report also comes with a 50% off coupon that you can use to schedule a follow-up scan if you would like to make sure the deficiencies have been corrected properly.

We also offer discounted quick scans for small offices and commercial properties. However, there are many more variables involved in these types of inspections so we do not have a flat rate for them. Of course, we also offer full-service, highly technical and detailed inspections as well. Estimates and quotes for any type of service that you may require are always free - just ask!

Whether it's your home, office, or other commercial building, if you are using energy to heat and/or cool it, chances are there are leaks somewhere in the building. We can help you find them quickly! And the sooner you find and correct the problems, the sooner you will start saving energy and the sooner you will start pocketing the savings! Please contact us today to set up your inspection or get more information!

Infrared Inspection Service Update  --   Summer is here and air conditioners are running. Is your cool air escaping your home or office? Is heat relentlessly creeping in and causing your A/C to run overtime? If you're not sure, we can tell you that it probably is and we can show you exactly what you need to do to stop wasting that energy and MONEY!

Summer Aerials  --  With the crops planted and the trees filled out, there is no shortage of beautiful green colors out there!

This is absolutely the best time to have aerial photos taken that will be displayed continuously throughout the year. Plentiful sunshine, minimal shadows, and lots of green make summer photos look good all year long, in every season.

June traditionally has plenty of great days for aerial photos, though quite a few of those beautiful days have some clouds. Even the nice looking, fair weather clouds can be detrimental to your images - it only takes a few cloud shadows in the wrong places to spoil a perfect aerial. July is a great month for photos as well, but our concern tends to shift from cloud shadows to haze and visibility issues. In August, we start seeing lighter shades of green and some yellows as it is typically a dry month. September is generally another great month for "green" aerials and usually has a good number of clear, crisp days. We are usually very, very busy in September!

As always, scheduling as far in advance as possible is your best bet to get the highest quality photos. So give us a call to discuss your aerial, architectural, or infrared photos or video today, even if you don't think you'll be needing service for several weeks or even months!

Above All - Ohio in the Cleveland Plain Dealer  --   In case you missed it, Above All - Ohio photographer Mike Holthouse was honored to be interviewed by Grant Segall for a feature article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer. The article ran on page A-2 on Sunday, December 11, 2011.

By the way, keep checking back in to our web site - we hope to be adding a "press" section soon to show off some of our growing collection of photos used in various newspapers and other publications.
Website Updates  --   We continue to update our "Stock Photos of the Week." regularly, but sometimes we get busy this time of year and the intervals between updates become a little, shall we say, "irregular..." Let's just say we average an update once per week...

All photos from the "Stock Photo of the Week" archives are viewable in either an automatic or manually controlled slide show format. Moving your mouse over the slide will pop up a brief description of it. Clicking on the slide will bring you to that particular photo in the regular archive page where you can read more details about the image as well as access a larger version of the image.

As a reminder, all of the photos on our web site are reduced in size (drastically reduced in size...) and compressed for faster loading in your web browser. The photos we deliver to clients are at least 4 times bigger and much sharper than the ones you see online. Of course, the images we deliver do not have copyright notices or watermarks on them. Our clients can "zoom in" on their photos and view everything in great detail.

We have not been able to update our 2012 blog as regularly as we would like, but keep checking back - we hope to update it in June at some point.

Infrared Inspection Service Update  --   Although we have said a number of times that summer and winter are the best times for infrared inspections, that does not mean we can't perform an inspection for you in the spring or fall! All we need is a temperature difference between the outside air and the area(s) we are inspecting.

We love having our windows open as much as possible - just like most people. The problem with that (as far as infrared inspections are concerned...) is that when the windows are open, there is not a lot of temperature difference between the inside and outside of the building. We never like to call beautiful days "unfortunate," but the more nice days we have in the spring and fall, the fewer good days we have to perform infrared inspections.

All is not lost, though -- we can generally compensate for these weather conditions by scheduling our inspections for first thing in the morning or later in the evening. (Hint: Schedule your inspection well in advance to make sure we are available at your preferred time!)

Spring Aerials  --  Wow - spring sprung early in Ohio (and much of the U.S.)! There is still time to get aerial photos of buildings or ground features that will be obscured by trees, leaves, and snow in the other seasons, but time is running out!

Please contact us ASAP if you need photos before the trees fill out. Time is not on our side this year...

Give us a call to discuss your aerial, architectural, or infrared photos today, even if you don't think you'll be needing service for several weeks or even months!

Website Updates  --  After a busy couple of weeks, we finally got a chance to update the past couple of "Stock Photos of the Week." (Did you catch our April Fool's Day joke? We didn't think anyone would actually fall for it, but we did hope it made people laugh or smile...)

As mentioned previously, all photos from the "Stock Photo of the Week" archives are now viewable in either an automatic or manually controlled slide show format. This week, we further enhanced the slide shows by making the slides even bigger - now you can see even more detail in our photos!

Since we're on the topic of details (even though this doesn't really fit into this "web site update" section of the news...), it seems like a good time to remind you that all of the photos on our web site are reduced in size (drastically reduced in size...) and compressed for faster loading in your web browser. The photos we deliver to clients are at least 4x bigger and much sharper than the ones you see online. Of course, the images we deliver do not have copyright notices or watermarks on them. Our clients can "zoom in" on their photos and view everything in great detail.

Back to the web site updates -- our 2012 blog has been updated with an entry for March and includes a close up aerial view of beautiful flowering trees in a residential neighborhood from the spring of 2009. Check it out!

March 2012: Above All - Ohio blog entry
This month's theme is a recurring one -- PLAN AHEAD!

The record-breaking high temperatures we've had here in northern Ohio (along with many other parts of the country) has the trees, flowers, and grass confused...

Normally during this time of the year, we are filling our April schedule with jobs for clients that have land or buildings which we be obscured by the leaves of full trees until November.

However, this year, the flowering trees are already in full bloom, and we are scrambling to get photos before the trees leaf out. Right now, the view from the air is still full of brown trees and fields in rural areas, but the grass is green in suburban areas. Soon, the buds on the trees will begin to open and we will start seeing a sort of green tint to the trees.

The flowering trees shown below on April 29, 2009, look just like this right now at the end of March, 2012 (though the leaves on the non-flowering trees are not as full... yet...).

A close up aerial of spring trees in full bloom in a suburban neighborhood

The point here is that the window of opportunity to get photos while the trees show a little green but don't obscure the ground of buildings below is very small - if you would like photos in these conditions, please contact us right away to schedule your flight!

Of course, if you miss the window this year, there's always next year.......

February 27, 2012: The latest news from Above All - Ohio
NEW IR PRICING!  --  We are pleased to announce a new low price for residential infrared scanning services! For as little as $97, homeowners can get a "quick scan" of their entire home to find hidden problems. We'll e-mail an abbreviated report including all images that show areas of potential concern. We'll even come back after you've corrected the deficiencies to re-scan the problem areas at no extra charge!

Please contact us today for complete details - some limitations do apply!

Infrared Service  --   Winter months are the perfect time for home energy audits. Winter is also a good time to do aerial infrared roof surveys (as long as there is not snow on the roof...). The temperature difference between the outside air and the inside air really makes the thermal signatures associated with air infiltration stand out.

Above All - Ohio offers on-site inspections for air and moisture infiltration as well as aerial thermal infrared photography. We have state-of-the-art thermal infrared imaging equipment and software and we have a certified professional thermographer on staff.

Contact us today to schedule your infrared inspection! The sooner you identify and correct insulation deficiencies or building problems, the sooner you can start saving money!

What can infrared inspections, photos, and/or videos do for you or your company? Check out our infrared thermography pages or give us a call to find out!

2012_IR_2362: Water infiltrates around a faulty window, running down the inside of the wall to the floor.

Winter Aerial Photos  --  Yes, we do fly and take photos all year long, including the winter months.

Please be advised that we need as much lead time as possible for scheduling your photos. Winter weather means that we have to plan our flights well in advance. The number of days and the amount of daylight available for taking photos is much more limited now than it is in the summer. Also, the sun is lower and the shadows of buildings and objects become longer and more noticeable in aerial photos. This is not necessarily a bad thing - long shadows can have a pleasing dramatic effect in a photo. However, it is something to be aware of should shadows be undesirable.

Of course, it is always in your best interest to give us as much notice as possible, not just during the winter. The more time we have to plan and the more time we have to wait for that perfect weather day, the more chance we have to get you the best possible photos.

Give us a call to discuss your aerial, architectural, or infrared photos today, even if you don't think you'll be needing service for several weeks or even months!

Website Updates  --  We have added yet another new way to browse through our popular "Stock Photo of the Week" feature. Now, you can view all of the images in a slide show format. That link will take you to the 2012 Slide Show page, and all other years can be accessed from there. The slide shows can be accessed from all of the regular archive pages as well.

Also this week, we made another entry to our 2012 blog. Check it out for some insight as to why we bother taking all of those stock photos whenever we fly.

As we said in a previous news update, the slide show at the top of this page is now limited to 30 photos and we will change the slides each week. The slide show will always include the 5 most recent SPOTW's plus 25 random photos from the rest of the archives.

In addition to the regular SPOTW archives and the new SPOTW slide shows, we will continue to maintain the super-cool Cooliris "wall." Cooliris is plug-in for Firefox, Safari, and Chrome - once you install it, just visit any one of our SPOTW archive pages - 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, or 2012 - and click on the Cooliris icon in your browser or the icon that appears when you hover over any photo on those pages.

February 2012: Above All - Ohio blog entry
The mild winter in northern Ohio (and pretty much all of the country...) continues and we have no complaints!

Well, maybe just one tiny complaint...

We had planned to expand our collection of scenic winter aerials this year, but there just hasn't been enough snow on the ground (or ice on Lake Erie...) to be able to obtain those nice, snowy landscapes we were hoping to acquire.

Which brings me to this month's topic - stock photography. We try to acquire and showcase a wide variety of stock images for those that need them. We collect images of landmarks, skylines, rural landscapes, and land patterns as we fly from site to site throughout the year.

Sometimes, as much as we'd like to help, it is just not possible for us to get the images our customers need with a custom flight. The weather conditions may not be favorable before a deadline, or it may not be the right season (for example, if you need nice green landscapes of northern Ohio from early October through approximately mid-May, your only option is stock photography...).

So, if you have an immediate need for a certain type of photo - whether you need a snowy landscape in July, beautiful fall colors in April, or people relaxing on a beach in February - please let us know!

We will be happy to search our archives for the images that you may need. We maintain a database of general descriptions of our stock photos and we geo-tag all of our photos after each flight so we can search for images by location.

January 23, 2012: The latest news from Above All - Ohio
NEW IR PRICING!  --  We are pleased to announce a new low price for residential infrared scanning services! For as little as $97, homeowners can get a "quick scan" of their entire home to find hidden problems. We'll even come back after you've corrected the deficiencies and re-scan the problem areas at no charge.

Please contact us today for complete details - some limitations do apply!

It's actually always in your best interest to give us as much notice as possible, not just during the winter. The more time we have to plan and the more time we have to wait for that perfect weather day, the more chance we have to get you the best possible photos.

Give us a call to discuss your aerial, architectural, or infrared photos today, even if you don't think you'll be needing service for several weeks or even months!
Website Updates  --  The 2012 "Stock Photo of the Week" archive page is up and running! We hope you will enjoy seeing a new aerial, architectural, or infrared photo each week (approximately...) in 2012! If you have something you'd like to see, by all means, let us know...

We've made our first entry to the 2012 blog. Check it out and read about some of the challenges of flying in the winter.

As we said in our last news update, we updated the slide show at the top of this page with new images. Initially, it contained every photo from our SPOTW archives, but that slowed down the page load too much. We now have the number of slides limited to 30 and we will change the slides each week. The slide show will now include the 5 most recent SPOTW's plus 25 random photos from the rest of the archives.

If you haven't already checked it out, but sure to play around with the Cooliris wall - a new way to browse our stock photo of the week archives. Cooliris is plug-in for Firefox, Safari, or Chrome - once you install it, just visit any one of our SPOTW archive pages - 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, or 2012 - and click on the Cooliris "wall" icon in your browser or the icon that appears when you hover over any photo. 2012 photos have now been added to the wall...

If you do not have the free plug-in, click on the "Free Download" button on this page and check it out! Firefox users can also add Cooliris through Mozilla's secure site.

January 2012: Above All - Ohio blog entry
Winter flying is vastly different from the other seasons. Proper planning is an absolute must, which is why we really stress to our customers that they need to plan ahead if they're going to need photos in the winter months. Unfortunately, even with careful planning, things can and do change quickly - especially in the winter! This week served as another reminder of that...

First of all, let me say that the winter weather is not only a challenge for pilots - the weather forecasters that the pilots depend on also have a more difficult time in the winter. Subtle changes in winds, temperatures, and cloud cover can have drastic effects on the overall weather pattern. We don't blame them or complain when the weather doesn't turn out as predicted - we fully realize how difficult their job is!

Anyway -- on Sunday morning, the forecast for that afternoon called for clear skies and high clouds in the area of our photo shoot. By noon (as we were getting ready to head to the airport), the forecast had changed to low clouds and a chance of snow! We called off...

Monday morning, the forecast was for clear skies with clouds and a slight chance of snow or rain moving in late in the afternoon. This time, the forecast held until we were in the air. By the time we got to the site, it was completely cloud covered (which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it wasn't ideal). On our way back home, the clouds got lower and we could see some precipitation heading our way. We hadd to change course stay ahead of the weather and we decided to skip a planned stop to top of the fuel (which wasn't a problem - ensuring we have plenty of fuel to get home is always part of the flight plan!).

The moral of the story is (once again), please plan ahead and plan for that plan to change! We strive to deliver the best possible photos and we have the best chance of doing that when we are given lots of time to get the job done. We may be good, but some things are just out of our control.
