February 2012: Above All - Ohio blog entry
The mild winter in northern Ohio (and pretty much all of the country...) continues and we have no complaints!

Well, maybe just one tiny complaint...

We had planned to expand our collection of scenic winter aerials this year, but there just hasn't been enough snow on the ground (or ice on Lake Erie...) to be able to obtain those nice, snowy landscapes we were hoping to acquire.

Which brings me to this month's topic - stock photography. We try to acquire and showcase a wide variety of stock images for those that need them. We collect images of landmarks, skylines, rural landscapes, and land patterns as we fly from site to site throughout the year.

Sometimes, as much as we'd like to help, it is just not possible for us to get the images our customers need with a custom flight. The weather conditions may not be favorable before a deadline, or it may not be the right season (for example, if you need nice green landscapes of northern Ohio from early October through approximately mid-May, your only option is stock photography...).

So, if you have an immediate need for a certain type of photo - whether you need a snowy landscape in July, beautiful fall colors in April, or people relaxing on a beach in February - please let us know!

We will be happy to search our archives for the images that you may need. We maintain a database of general descriptions of our stock photos and we geo-tag all of our photos after each flight so we can search for images by location.

January 23, 2012: The latest news from Above All - Ohio
NEW IR PRICING!  --  We are pleased to announce a new low price for residential infrared scanning services! For as little as $97, homeowners can get a "quick scan" of their entire home to find hidden problems. We'll even come back after you've corrected the deficiencies and re-scan the problem areas at no charge.

Please contact us today for complete details - some limitations do apply!
Winter Aerial Photos  --  Yes, we do fly and take photos all year long, including the winter months.

Please be advised that we need as much lead time as possible for scheduling your photos. Winter weather means that we have to plan our flights well in advance. The number of days and the amount of daylight available for taking photos is much more limited now than it is in the summer. Also, the sun is lower and the shadows of buildings and objects become longer and more noticeable in aerial photos. This is not necessarily a bad thing - long shadows can have a pleasing dramatic effect in a photo. However, it is something to be aware of should shadows be undesirable.

It's actually always in your best interest to give us as much notice as possible, not just during the winter. The more time we have to plan and the more time we have to wait for that perfect weather day, the more chance we have to get you the best possible photos.

Give us a call to discuss your aerial, architectural, or infrared photos today, even if you don't think you'll be needing service for several weeks or even months!
Website Updates  --  The 2012 "Stock Photo of the Week" archive page is up and running! We hope you will enjoy seeing a new aerial, architectural, or infrared photo each week (approximately...) in 2012! If you have something you'd like to see, by all means, let us know...

We've made our first entry to the 2012 blog. Check it out and read about some of the challenges of flying in the winter.

As we said in our last news update, we updated the slide show at the top of this page with new images. Initially, it contained every photo from our SPOTW archives, but that slowed down the page load too much. We now have the number of slides limited to 30 and we will change the slides each week. The slide show will now include the 5 most recent SPOTW's plus 25 random photos from the rest of the archives.

If you haven't already checked it out, but sure to play around with the Cooliris wall - a new way to browse our stock photo of the week archives. Cooliris is plug-in for Firefox, Safari, or Chrome - once you install it, just visit any one of our SPOTW archive pages - 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, or 2012 - and click on the Cooliris "wall" icon in your browser or the icon that appears when you hover over any photo. 2012 photos have now been added to the wall...

If you do not have the free plug-in, click on the "Free Download" button on this page and check it out! Firefox users can also add Cooliris through Mozilla's secure site.
Infrared Service  --   Winter months are the perfect time for home energy audits. Winter is also a good time to do aerial infrared roof surveys (as long as there is not snow on the roof...). The temperature difference between the outside air and the inside air really makes the thermal signatures associated with air infiltration stand out.

Above All - Ohio offers on-site inspections for air and moisture infiltration as well as aerial thermal infrared photography. We have state-of-the-art thermal infrared imaging equipment and software and we have a certified professional thermographer on staff.

Contact us today to schedule your infrared inspection! The sooner you identify and correct insulation deficiencies or building problems, the sooner you can start saving money!

What can infrared inspections, photos, and/or videos do for you or your company? Check out our infrared thermography pages or give us a call to find out!
Above All - Ohio in the Cleveland Plain Dealer  --   In case you missed it, Above All - Ohio photographer Mike Holthouse was interviewed by Grant Segall for a feature article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer. The article ran on page A-2 on Sunday, December 11, 2011.

January 2012: Above All - Ohio blog entry
Winter flying is vastly different from the other seasons. Proper planning is an absolute must, which is why we really stress to our customers that they need to plan ahead if they're going to need photos in the winter months. Unfortunately, even with careful planning, things can and do change quickly - especially in the winter! This week served as another reminder of that...

First of all, let me say that the winter weather is not only a challenge for pilots - the weather forecasters that the pilots depend on also have a more difficult time in the winter. Subtle changes in winds, temperatures, and cloud cover can have drastic effects on the overall weather pattern. We don't blame them or complain when the weather doesn't turn out as predicted - we fully realize how difficult their job is!

Anyway -- on Sunday morning, the forecast for that afternoon called for clear skies and high clouds in the area of our photo shoot. By noon (as we were getting ready to head to the airport), the forecast had changed to low clouds and a chance of snow! We called off...

Monday morning, the forecast was for clear skies with clouds and a slight chance of snow or rain moving in late in the afternoon. This time, the forecast held until we were in the air. By the time we got to the site, it was completely cloud covered (which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it wasn't ideal). On our way back home, the clouds got lower and we could see some precipitation heading our way. We hadd to change course stay ahead of the weather and we decided to skip a planned stop to top of the fuel (which wasn't a problem - ensuring we have plenty of fuel to get home is always part of the flight plan!).

The moral of the story is (once again), please plan ahead and plan for that plan to change! We strive to deliver the best possible photos and we have the best chance of doing that when we are given lots of time to get the job done. We may be good, but some things are just out of our control.
